ANJAJAVY NEWS
Hello there from sunny Madagascar,
This morning we had some great excitement just in front of the hotel! The water seemed to be bubbling and alive with activity. We all ran to the swimming pool deck to be greeted not only by a school of dolphins, but also by three humpback whales who came close to the shore and put on a little show. They slowly made their way north, so a few of us made off quickly to the marina to get some better sightings from the boat. And what a spectacular morning we had!

They appeared to be three adults swimming alongside each other and were easy to spot with the wet air spraying high out of their blowholes. They were quite active on the surface of the water for the full time we watched them and gave us some perfect camera opportunities with a few waves of their fins and some awesome gentle tale displays.
After approximately half an hour we decided to leave them to get on with their usual daily routine – we didn’t want to bother three large creatures of that size for too long (adult humpback whales weigh approximately 30 tons). So we set off back to the hotel with huge smiles on our faces, leaving three whales who were probably glad to be rid of some strange creatures “oohing and aahing” at them.
Although it is not usual to see the whales so close to the hotel, they are common in our waters – although usually a little further out – at this time of year as they migrate to the warmer tropical waters for calving. They should be heading off back to the colder Antarctic soon, but here’s to hoping they enjoy the beauty of Anjajavy as much as we do and are back soon!
